Empty Bowls: Artists helping feed Western NY

Nativity students in grade 6, 7 and 8th, along with other local school children, college students and professional artists, will be participating in a project titled
"Empty Bowls: Artists Helping Feed WNY"
Students' bowls will represent their thoughts on hunger and hope. The bowls will be auctioned off at The Burchfield-Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College on Sunday, May 22nd from 11 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The proceeds from the bowls will go to the Western New York Food Bank and Friends of the Night People.

Empty Bowl Artist Statement by Anastasia Flynn & Helen Gibson:
Hungry- a word that most people don’t take seriously or understand. Many people are in desperate need of food and struggle to get it. Most of us are used to going into the kitchen and grabbing something to eat, while others don’t have access to food like we do. With our pan we can make a big difference using only a small plate of food. Doing just a small task in making this pan, we can show hungry people that they are not alone and we are here to help out. Our pan called “World of Hunger Relief” has a world painted on the bottom and three different foods in it. This pan can help others across the area and represent us, what are doing all we can to make sure they can have full and nutritious meals.

Empty Bowl Artist Statement by Joey Hamilton and Josh Wilde:
Part of our world has a severe shortage of food. There are starving children all around the globe. In this bowl we stress how the world is sometimes similar to an empty bowl of rice. The outer part of the bowl is the world. On the inside there are only a few grains of rice and many spaces where rice once was. We are depicting the world as an almost empty bowl. While many people in the world prosper, thousands are starving with literally no food to eat.

Nickels for Nails

Nativity students have been collecting extra nickels (as well as pennies, dimes, quarters and dollars) to change the life of a local family in need.

Habitat for Humanity - Buffalo establishes partnerships in order to give a helping hand to families who otherwise would be unable to achieve their dream of ownership of a simple decent house in a safe environment.

Wyoming County SPCA Collection

Grades 5 through 8 will be working together on a service oriented project as part of their religion classes. The theme for the first trimester is stewardship concentrating on the works of St Francis of Assisi.

Each class will be contributing to a bulletin board dealing with Harvest, Heroes, Hope and Humanity. To carry out St. Francis’s message towards God’s gift, a school wide collection will be held for the Wyoming County SPCA. They are located in the Eastern Hills Mall. This particular organization is a no kill shelter and is in desperate need of help. Below is a list of items they need. We are encouraging your child to contribute everyday items from around the house, so this does not become a financial request. However, if anyone would like to donate monetarily that would be fine.

October 4th , the Feast of St. Francis, we are holding a blessing of pets. Pets may be brought in by a parent or the students can bring in a picture of their pet or a stuffed animal representing their pet.

Wish list:

Clay cat litter, scoopable cat litter, Purina dry cat food, kitten food (dry or canned), bleach, latex plastic gloves, antibacterial soap, 33 gallon garbage bags, copy paper, paper towels, gently used towels or blankets laundry soap, Q tips, wash cloths, postage stamps, plastic shopping bags, antibacterial dishwashing liquid, and envelopes.
